Challenge
A windowless 12 × 8 ft multi-purpose bedroom with no natural light, insufficient existing lighting, and no room for a suspended fixture in a household of very tall occupants.
A custom surface-mounted 2 × 4 ft LED fixture with dimming and RGB colour control turned a dark, windowless room into a bright, multifunctional space.
In an older apartment building with limited ceiling lighting, a compact 12 × 8-foot room was serving several purposes for a teenager: it was his bedroom, a place to play his keyboard, and a dedicated space for homework and studying.
The room presented an additional challenge — it had no windows, meaning there was no access to natural light. The existing lighting was not sufficient to comfortably support the range of activities taking place in the space.
The teenager also wanted RGB lighting to add a more dynamic and entertaining element to the room. At the same time, because the family living in the apartment were all very tall, a conventional pendant or suspended fixture was not practical. They wanted a solution that would provide ample illumination without creating an obstruction overhead.
A windowless 12 × 8 ft multi-purpose bedroom with no natural light, insufficient existing lighting, and no room for a suspended fixture in a household of very tall occupants.
A custom remote-controlled 2 × 4 ft rectangular LED fixture — surface-mounted for zero overhead obstruction, dimmable for every activity, and equipped with RGB colour control.
Surface-mounted to the ceiling with cable guides routing the wiring cleanly along ceiling and walls, and drivers housed in a discreet floor-level box near an existing outlet — no major electrical work required.
The dimmable functionality gave the family control over the lighting level throughout the day and for different activities, while the RGB capability added an element of fun that made the space feel more personal to its young occupant. The client was extremely pleased with the quality and quantity of light, which significantly improved the usability and overall experience of the room.
This project demonstrates the value of designing lighting around the way a space is actually used. By combining functional illumination, dimming, RGB colour control, and a surface-mounted design, Diana Lighting and Controls overcame the limitations of an older apartment and created a lighting solution tailored specifically to the family's needs.
Tell us about the room, how it's used, and what's not working. We will design a custom LED solution that makes it bright, flexible, and comfortable — whatever the constraints.
